You Are Chosen, Not Forsaken — Finding Your Identity in Christ 1 Peter 2:9

Have you ever found yourself questioning your worth, wondering if you truly matter, or if God has forgotten you? Maybe you’ve walked through a season where you felt invisible—overlooked by people and perhaps even by God. In those moments, it’s easy to believe the lie that you are forgotten. But Scripture tells a different story. In 1 Peter 2:9, we are reminded of an unshakable truth: “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.” This verse speaks directly to our identity and position in Christ. It reminds us that no matter what the world says or how we feel, we are chosen by God and never forsaken by Him.
To be chosen means more than just being accepted—it means being set apart, handpicked by the Creator of the universe with divine purpose and calling. God doesn’t choose randomly. He chooses intentionally, purposefully, and out of love. You were chosen before you ever knew Him. Ephesians 1:4 says, “He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight.” That means your identity isn’t rooted in your performance, your past, or your pain—it’s rooted in God’s eternal love for you.
But if we’re honest, there are times when we don’t feel chosen. We feel abandoned, rejected, or unworthy. Life gets hard, people hurt us, prayers go unanswered, and we begin to wonder, “God, where are You? Have You forgotten me?” In those moments, it’s crucial to stand on the truth: You are not forsaken. God promises over and over again in Scripture that He will never leave you nor forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:6, Hebrews 13:5). His presence is not dependent on your circumstances. Even when you can’t feel Him, He’s there. Even when everything seems to be falling apart, He is still holding you together.
This verse from 1 Peter not only reminds us of our identity but also of our purpose. You were chosen “that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.” You were not chosen to stay stuck in shame, fear, or regret. You were chosen to reflect His light—to be a living testimony of His grace. Every scar, every trial, every deliverance you’ve experienced becomes part of the story that points others back to Him. You’re not just chosen to be blessed, you’re chosen to be bold—bold in your worship, bold in your witness, and bold in your walk with Christ.
So, what does it look like to live as someone who is chosen and not forsaken? It means waking up every day and choosing to believe what God says about you over what the enemy whispers. It means refusing to find your worth in other people’s opinions, and instead resting in the truth that you are already fully known and deeply loved by God. It means walking through hard seasons with the assurance that you’re not alone, because the One who chose you is also the One who walks beside you.
It also means embracing your role as a royal priesthood. In the Old Testament, priests were set apart to intercede for others and minister before the Lord. Today, through Christ, you carry that same calling. You are an ambassador of His Kingdom—a light in the darkness, a voice of hope, and a vessel of His love.
As a reminder of this truth, take time today to reflect on what it means to be God’s “special possession.” You are treasured. You are pursued. You are held. Whether you’re on the mountaintop or in the valley, God hasn’t taken His eyes off you. You are chosen, not forsaken.
If you need a tangible reminder of this, I’ve created a free printable scripture card that says “You are chosen, not forsaken.” Place it on your mirror, in your Bible, or at your desk. Let it remind you daily of who you are and whose you are.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for choosing me even when I feel unworthy. Remind me daily that I am not forsaken. Help me to walk in the truth of my identity in You, and to live boldly as someone called out of darkness into Your marvelous light. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
You are not forgotten. You are not too far gone. You are not invisible.
You are chosen, not forsaken. And you are deeply, deeply loved.
