The Humble Call to Serve: Jesus washed feet

In a world that often celebrates status, power, and self-promotion, the idea of serving others can seem countercultural—even radical. Yet for those who follow Jesus, service is not just a suggestion; it’s a way of life. It’s a reflection of the very heart of Christ.

One of the most powerful examples of humility and service in the Bible is found in John 13. On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus did something shocking: He took a towel, knelt down, and began to wash the feet of His disciples.

In ancient times, foot-washing was a job reserved for the lowest of servants. Roads were dusty, people wore sandals, and feet were often filthy. For Jesus—the Son of God, the King of Kings—to stoop down and wash the feet of those who followed Him was an act of breathtaking humility.

After He finished, Jesus said:

“Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”
—John 13:14–15 (NIV)

This wasn’t just about literal foot-washing. It was a model for how we are to live—serving one another in love, with humility, and without expecting recognition.

Why Serving Matters

  1. It Reflects the Heart of Jesus
Jesus came not to be served, but to serve (Mark 10:45). When we serve others, we mirror His character and carry His love into the world.
  2. It Breaks Down Pride
Serving others requires humility. It reminds us that no task is beneath us and no person is above us. Jesus humbled Himself—and we’re called to do the same.
  3. It Builds the Body of Christ
When we serve in our churches, communities, and families, we strengthen the unity of the Body. Everyone has something to offer, and every act of service matters.
  4. It Points Others to Jesus
Acts of service can open hearts. When people see the love of Christ through our actions, it can lead them to seek the source of that love.

What Does Serving Look Like Today?

You don’t have to be a pastor or missionary to serve like Jesus. Serving can be as simple as:

  • Making a meal for someone in need
  • Volunteering at church or in your community
  • Listening to a friend who’s hurting
  • Donating time or resources to help others
  • Encouraging someone with a kind word

It’s not about titles or recognition. It’s about showing up in the small, everyday moments and choosing to love like Jesus.

Final Thoughts

If Jesus, the Savior of the world, was willing to wash feet, then no act of service is too small or too menial for us. True greatness in the Kingdom of God is found not in being served, but in serving.

Let us live with towels in hand—ready to kneel, to love, and to serve.
